Director of Development

NATIONAL DANCE INSTITUTE (NDI) seeks Director of Development to lead the organization’s fundraising activities.   Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will collaborate with the Board of Directors and senior staff to establish fundraising goals, develop strategies to grow and diversify contributed income, and build a community of support to enable NDI’s strategic growth.  

Candidates need to have a measurable track record of successful fundraising, with a deep understanding of and connections to funding constituencies including individuals, foundations, government and corporate sources.  Candidates must demonstrate an ability to excel in a fast-paced, creative environment and guide a team in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts, overseeing grant applications and reports, and managing fundraising and cultivation events.  Must have exceptional skills in writing, financial analysis, oral presentation, problem solving, strategic thinking, and staff management.

Responsibilities:

* Work closely with Executive Director, Board of Directors and other senior staff in developing strategic fundraising direction of the organization, including strategies for:
- Institutional support, including private foundations and government agencies
- Corporate contributions, sponsorships and in-kind support
- Individual donors/major gifts
- Fundraising and cultivation events

* Participate in the organization’s annual planning, goal setting and budgeting processes

* Execute overall fundraising plan including prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship development

* Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with existing and prospective foundation, corporate, government, and individual funding sources

* Craft high-quality grant proposals, project budgets, year-end reports and fundraising materials.

* Provide the Executive Director and Board of Directors with timely reports and updates on fundraising, as requested

* Engage Board of Directors in meeting fundraising goals

* Serve as the fundraising liaison to public and private constituencies including corporations, government agencies, foundations, major donors, etc.

* Develop external alliances and collaborations to achieve fundraising goals

* Direct efforts to develop and improve systems and procedures that track the cultivation and acknowledgement of gifts/grants, manage prospect research and monitor grant reporting

* Manage the donor database and the donor/grants calendars, and ensure that appropriate and timely recognition and reporting occurs for all donations, grants, and contracts

* Craft informational materials as needed, including annual report, board recruitment packets, development brochures, etc.

* Manage development staff including associates, interns and volunteers

Qualifications:

* Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire a wide range of audiences

* Significant knowledge of and successful track record in fundraising from a variety of sources, including individual, corporate, foundation and government as well as having worked effectively with staff and Board members.

* A systematic approach to fundraising strategies and the management of day-to-day operations

* Experience planning successful fundraising events.

* Experience working with non-profit and/or educational organizations and holding fiscal responsibilities; proven track record of maintaining fiscal integrity and budget compliance

* Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build confidence and rapport among donors in a complex fundraising community

* Self-motivated person who works well with staff, volunteers and Board

* Proven organizational and project management skills

* A flexible, creative, collaborative spirit and a demonstrated passion for arts and the mission, vision, and values of NDI
