Directed by NDI Teaching Artist and Choreographer Elizabeth Sellner, our 2025 Event of the Year performances will celebrate the Evolution of Rock Music by bringing together over 150 talented children from New York City public schools from Saturday, June 14 to Monday, June 16, 2025 at NYU Skirball.

Throughout the year, these NDI dancers have been studying the evolution of rock music through lenses such as: music theory, song structure, and instrumentation; historical figures and activism; technology (the radio, the electric guitar, the synthesizer, vinyl records); or as an outlet for emotion and expression. By tracing the genre from Sister Rosetta Tharpe (often called the Godmother of Rock and Roll) and the invention of the electric guitar in the 1930s, through endless rebirths of the genre to the indie rock and pop punk of the 21st century, these dancers will be able to show the richness and dynamism of a musical genre through which they may also find their own voices.
