"In the ‘90s, Bill Bartlett saw "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin’" on THIRTEEN and it changed the course of his life. The Academy Award-winning documentary, which profiles Jacques d'Amboise and his work with children, inspired Bill to create his own unique afterschool program."
"There are 40 dancers taking part in the program this year, and there seem to be almost as many adults in the room — including physical therapy students and dance instructors — working with the kids. Close to half of the children in the program have disabilities..."
"Even when you're an alum, you want to come back, you want to continue working here," student Clara Pallordet said. "It's just such a special opportunity, and it enlightens you so much, you want to continue with it."
"After a composite of d'Amboise's charismatic dancing was shown, Jacques regaled us with stories. He didn't talk about dancing for Mr. B, he didn't talk about his dazzling turns in the movie Carousel, or how dashing he looked in the emerald green shirt in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. He talked about Tanaquil Le Clerq in Jerome Robbins' Afternoon of a Faun (1953)—a tiny clip of it was in the montage that DFA showed in tribute to him."
"Before the main event, 80 local children participants of The Performance Project: Youth in Motion will take the stage. It will be their last performance of SPAC’s two-week dance intensive. National Dance Institute choreographed the dance and supported the initiative to teach children dance skills and gain self-confidence."
"Hundreds of cheery and enthusiastic students from the Institute’s Celebration Team, SWAT Team, and First Team took the Skirball Stage to share with an audience of parents, supporters, and newcomers the relevance and power of dance and arts education existing in New York City’s Public School— through NDI."
"Most water journeys are made by boat, but this one will be executed proudly on foot. The happy travelers are more than 200 talented young performers from the National Dance Institute, a nonprofit that brings free arts programs to public schools."
"Directed by Kelly Buwalda, this event will bring together over 200 talented dancers from NYC public schools in an exhilarating performance that celebrates cultures, creatures, and cities that thrive at the river’s edge. With original choreography and live music, the dancers will samba through the Amazon, strut along the Hudson, and set sail on the Mississippi. This performance will remind us of the river’s beauty, power to connect us all to each other, and the need to conserve these precious water sources for future generations."
